SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — With cyber-crime on the rise, security experts shared safety tips during a Cyber Security Summit in San Bernardino.

The convention Tuesday was a first-ever for Cal State San Bernardino with digital security and drones among the topics discussed.

“Most cybersecurity problems that we have in this country are not technological problems. They’re human-being problems,” said Robin Montana Williams with Cybersecurity at the Department of Homeland Security.

As KCAL9’s Tom Wait reports, by clicking on tempting links or dangerous emails, consumers often allow hackers in but Williams says there are protective mechanisms.

“The phishing campaigns, these breaches, in most cases you’re going to go back and you’re going to find out that somebody fell subject to some type of social engineering event and let the bad guy into the system,” he explained.

Common-sense measures, such as frequently changing passwords and not providing sensitive information to untrusted sources, can also stave off hackers, reported Wait.

“Information is your greatest asset right now and with just a little bit of your information, somebody can come along, they can steal it, they can impersonate you,” said Tony Coulson, a professor at Cal State San Bernardino.

Drones were also discussed and have been banned on the campus because of how easily they can be hacked.
