A team of undergraduate students who are associated with the Center for Information Assurance (CfIA), who formed a registered student organization (RSO) open to all U of M students last year, won 1st place in the Department of Energy Cyber Defense Competition on April 7, 2018 at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The team was comprised of five Computer Science majors (Craig Miller, McKittrick Swindle, Jon Walter Cobb, Johnathon Hardin, and Coby Glass). For a few of these students, this was their second time competing (and winning) as a member of their RSO. Dr. Dipankar Dasgupta served as the team’s advisor and mentor.
“Our student team demonstrated excellent performance in this competition by protecting the assigned network from red team attacks, showing their skills in multi-level cyber defense and the specialized education they receive at the University of Memphis,” according to Prof. Dasgupta, the Director of the Center for Information Assurance. “The University of Memphis ranked 5th overall Nationwide in the DoE CDC. We are all proud of our students’ continued success for the last few years”, he added.
