The CAE in Cybersecurity Community will hold an online, two-day workshop on Tuesday, May 25 and Thursday, May 27, 2021 on “Creating a Job-Ready Cybersecurity Workforce: Connecting the NICE Framework to Education and Training.” This workshop will engage attendees to explore how the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education Workforce Framework for Cybersecurity (NICE Framework) can support learning processes and assessment mechanisms for competency development. In November 2020 NICE published its first revision of the NIST Special Publication (SP) 800-181, the Workforce Framework for Cybersecurity (NICE Framework), a fundamental reference for describing and sharing information about cybersecurity work. The NICE Framework was developed in response to a growing need for skilled workers in this field and bridges employers, education and training providers who are part of an integrated ecosystem facilitating career pathways for learners. At its foundation are core building blocks -- Task, Knowledge, and Skill statements -- and the NICE Framework identifies means of applying these via Teams, Work Roles, and Competencies. The latter of these -- Competencies -- were newly introduced in this revision and are reflective of a shift in the cybersecurity profession at large towards a skills- and competency-based approach in recruitment practices and workforce development. In this workshop we will explore ways the NICE Framework can help increase alignment and coordination between employers and education and training providers to improve learner outcomes.
